Warriors drop Northern 2A League twin bill
Six consecutive hits weren’t enough to overcome another poor fielding day as the Warriors lost at Hawthorne 16-6 in the opening game of a Northern 2A League doubleheader sweep by the Serpents on Saturday.
Only two of the Serpents’ runs were earned as Whittell committed nine errors in the first-game defeat. The Warriors had six more errors in the second game, a 9-7 loss.
“They are having a tough time adjusting to the speed of everything,” Amaral said.
The highlight of the day for Whittell was stringing together six hits in the top of the sixth inning in the opener to temporarily stave off the 10-run mercy rule. Hawthorne put away the Warriors with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Nick Shepack and Alex Potnick each delivered two hits and combined for three RBI.
The Warriors also rallied in game two, tying the score at 7 after trailing 7-2. But Hawthorne again retaliated with the game’s final two runs.
Shepack followed up with two more hits, Carter Amaral collected two hits and first-year player Cameron Fields produced three hits.
Whittell (4-6 overall, 0-2 division) plays at Truckee on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
