Warriors heat up at Edgewood Tahoe GC

Naturally, the Warriors’ golf scores warmed up when they finally played their home course – Edgewood Tahoe – on Friday.

Whittell High finished fifth out of 12 teams and was the top Class 2A school in the 18-hole event at Stateline.

The timing couldn’t be any better since the Warriors host the regional tournament on Wednesday.

Marty Rahbeck shot a career-best 81 to place ninth individually and Cody Harrington and Kirk Baines fired scores of 83 and 85, respectively, to lead Whittell’s scoring. With Tyler Fairbank (87) and Tim Lipovsky (88) also shooting in the 80s, it marked the first time this season the Warriors have all scored below 90 for 18 holes.

“That’s the score and the type of play we expected going into the season,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase on the Warriors’ 424 team total.

That left the Warriors only 21 shots behind winner Lowry and five in back of fourth-place Incline. Dayton was second at 405 and Fernley third at 412.

Rahbeck has lowered his score as team members have been able to focus on the subtleties of the game on their home course.

“He’s stepped up, and his score (on Friday) is respectable,” Maltase said. “The last week he’s been working on his short game, keeping track of greens in regulation and fairways hit.”

Whittell will try to reclaim the Northern 2A zone championship on Wednesday at Edgewood Tahoe. The Warriors have won five of the past six championships.

Play begins at noon.
