Warriors look to coral first win

Tribune Staff Report

With only two games left in what has been a disappointing campaign, the Whittell Warrior football team (0-5, 0-7) will be playing for pride Friday when it faces the Independence Colts (1-4, 2-5) at 1:30 p.m. in Elko.

Both teams are coming off shutout losses to Battle Mountain and Lovelock in which the combined margin of victory was 105-0.

Friday’s contest could likely be a high-scoring affair, as both defenses gave up more than 200 yards on the ground in last week’s action.

And while both teams have struggled to get anything going this year, Independence is likely to still be fired up from last year’s contest that saw Whittell pull out a last-second victory at home.

Down 20-15 with 30 seconds left in the game, the Warriors ran a fourth-and-one dive play up the middle, taking them to the goal line. On the next play the Warriors put the ball in the end zone on a quarterback bootleg to seal a 23-20 victory over Colts.

For Whittell, Independence presents an opportunity. Not to salvage the season, but an opportunity to take a step in the right direction with a victory.
