Warriors record first win

Whittell had every reason to lose its fifth straight boys basketball game Tuesday night in Coleville, but it didn’t

With regular player Bryan Sigel at home in Zephyr Cove, senior forward Luke Forvilly lost because of a flagrant foul 2 minutes into the contest and senior Joel Warnick saddled with three fouls after one quarter, the Warriors’ situation looked hopeless.

But the Warriors’ younger players stepped up and delivered a 50-36 triumph over Coleville.

Freshman Nick Summers scored 17 points and sophomore Nestor Flores contributed 12. Senior Matt Norfleet also scored 12 points, and Mike Ingenluyff came off the bench to score five points and, more importantly, to keep Whittell competitive on the boards.

“We’ve been on the road for five games, so it’s nice to get a win matter where we play – especially under the circumstances,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase.

Forvilly was dismissed from the game after officials ruled that he elbowed a Coleville player while coming down with a first-quarter rebound.

Coleville led 12-4 in the first quarter, but then the Warriors rallied by making the hosts work on offense.

“We just picked up the defense and got a lot of fastbreak points,”Maltase said.

Whittell, 1-4, keeps its road act going this weekend. The Warriors play Needles at 5 p.m. Friday and The Meadows at noon and Indian Springs at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Meadows Tournament.
