Warriors spank Dayton

Gary Kank

The Whittell Warriors volleyball team (7-3) continued its early season success Wednesday, rolling over the Dayton Dust Devils 15-3, 15-6 and 15-8.

“We had a very solid team effort tonight,” WHS coach Dan McLaughlin said. “While we may not have played our best game, Dayton just had no idea what to expect.”

Stephanie Evans was once again the anchor in the middle, navigating the new “quick strike” offense with precise passing.

“Stephanie ran a great show,” Mclaughlin said. “Her passing forced the opponent to hit the ball right into our defense.”

While Evans controlled the middle, Ashley Berns was driving the ball down the Dust Devils’ throat. She had nine kills in the match, while teammates Jessika Purdy and Erin Silver came away with seven each.

With their recent success against 3A teams, the prospects for another state title run are looking good.

“Each game we are getting more and more in tune to what we’re capable of,” McLaughlin said. “And as we do that, we’re going to get stronger and stronger.”

The girls look to continue their winning streak this weekend as they compete against fellow 2A members in the Lovelock tournament.
