ZEPHYR COVE – The Whittell High volleyball team got back on the winning track Tuesday with a decisive three-game sweep of the Silver Stage Nighthawks, 25-14, 25-21, 25-13.
After losing their first two matches of the season to strong Carson and Truckee teams, the Warriors showed the power and efficiency that helped them win the past four 2A state championships.
“It’s good to see the veterans step up and put their stamp on the game,” Whittell coach Dan McLaughlin said. “Everyone had a strong game. We need to play a game like this to get ready for the tournament this weekend.”
Whittell jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the opener thanks to the powerful serving of Kendra Koskin and strong net play of Jordan Reeder. An ace by Kristin Pfotenhauer closed out the first match.
The second game started strong for the Warriors who took a 20-12 advantage behind several kills by sophomore Jacquelyn Baines and Brittney Makara’s consistent serving. The Nighthawks climbed back into the contest, pulling within one at 22-21, before two missed serves and a Koskin kill sealed the game.
In the final game, the Warriors cruised to victory with Lauren Andrew registering two aces and Isabel Concha-Foley and Emily Scharer playing strong at the net.
“It’s encouraging to see all the girls stepping up,” co-captain Koskin said. “We’re improving quite a bit.”
Reeder led the Warriors with nine kills, followed by Koskin and Baines with six each. Koskin had eight aces, with Andrew recording seven. Concha-Foley, Baines, Reeder and Koskin each had two blocks.
The Warriors play in the very competitive High Sierra Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Reno.
The Whittell JV volleyball team swept Silver Stage 25-6, 25-19.
