Warriors take it to new 4A school
Whittell High took advantage of the rare opportunity to beat up on a Class 4A team on Monday in Reno.
The Warriors pounded Damonte Ranch of Reno 4-0 and 4-1 in girls’ and boys’ soccer games, respectively, giving the new school a lesson in ball control and solid goalkeeping.
Italo Ferreira scored twice and Justin Darrow and Scott Lusby chipped in goals to give the Whitttell boys (1-4-1) its first win of the season.
Damonte scored first, but Whittell completed its scoring before the half ended.
“We tried to take it easy on them in the second half since they are a new school,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase, who played six JV players in the second half. “We worked on ball control and got some young guys some playing time.”
Freshman Kate Greenspan netted two goals and seniors Haley Shaw and Brooke Schussel scored once to key the girls’ triumph.
Whittell goalkeeper Elise Thomas also figured in the scoring, collecting an assist to go along with her second consecutive shutout for the 2-0 Warriors.
“They moved the ball around and played really well,” said WHS coach Jane Gadbois. “We were trying to get them to feel more comfortable passing the ball around to each other instead of playing kickball.”
Whittell plays host to Quincy on Thursday. The boys start at 3 p.m. and the girls’ game follows.
