Warriors thrive in close games

Put the Whittell High girls basketball team in a close game and the Warriors thrive.

“It’s the 76-11 games we don’t do well in,” joked Warriors coach Lindsay Wines following her team’s 26-25 nonleague win at Coleville on Tuesday night.

Ashley Berns put the Warriors ahead for good with a basket in the final 3 minutes as Whittell won for the second time in five games.

Whittell led 15-11 at halftime, but struggled with Coleville’s 1-3-1 zone defense in the second half. Coleville’s 12-7 third-quarter edge gave it a 23-22 lead after three periods.

“Their zone defense was kind of throwing us out of whack,” said Wines, who discontinued a new offense diagramed at halftime with the game up for grabs in the final period.

However, the Warriors held Coleville to two points in the fourth period and pulled out the win on four fourth-quarter points equally distributed between Berns and Caitlin Fagan.

Fagan led all scorers with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. The senior guard also made all four of her free-throw attempts.

Berns, Alisha Roth and Jocelyn Mata each netted two points.

Whittell travels to North Tahoe on Dec. 12 in Tahoe City.

The Warriors JV improved its record to 2-1 with a 32-14 dismantling of Coleville on Tuesday. Elise Thomas collected eight points and Tara Hordzwick scored six for the winners.

Whittell led 20-4 at intermission and coasted to the win.
