Staff reports

Lake Tahoe Gay Lesbian Foundation is gathering hikers for a 7-mile round-trip trek from Big Meadow trailhead to Dardanelles Lake on Aug. 7 starting at 9 a.m.

The group will leave promptly at 9 a.m. from the trailhead off Luther Pass on the western side of the road.

This moderate hike has an elevation gain of 560 feet, meandering through aspens, along rolling hills, past willows and other flora. Bring water and lunch.

West Shore bike trail is under way

Construction has begun on the Upper Sequoia Trail Crossing Public Safety Improvement Project.

The project provides safety improvements and increased visibility at the West Shore bike trail crossing between Sequoia Drive’s intersections with Highway 89.

Construction workers will reduce the grade of the trail, increase sight distances and install flashing signs that are activated automatically by users of the trail.

It is scheduled to be completed by mid to late August.

Caltrans has approved a temporary trail alignment during the construction to allow for trail users to walk along the shoulder on the lakeside of the highway for approximately 2,000 feet.

Trail users must dismount and walk their bikes in this section.
