Whittell beats South Tahoe in girls hoops

Steve Yingling

Wins have been scarce for the Whittell High girls basketball team over the past few years, but the Warriors still know how to celebrate a victory.

Whittell enjoyed a pizza party almost as much as its 50-45 victory over South Tahoe on Saturday in Zephyr Cove.

“For us it was a really good win in a lot of ways … just to get a win and get that little camel off of our back,” said Whittell coach Lindsay Wines.

After rallying from a three-point deficit late in the game, the Warrior piled up in center court for an emotional postgame celebration.

Aurora Terry, playing in her first game of the season, scored 12 of her team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. Terry, who came out late for Whittell, made 6-of-7 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

“Aurora did a great job for us, especially in the last two minutes. She made some crucial baskets,” Wines said.

Sarah Sufka also tallied 15 points for Whittell and Caitlin Fagan chipped in 10. Jennifer Miles controlled the boards, grabbing 15 rebounds.

Whittell won the game at the foul line, making 25 of 35.

The Warriors, 1-3, plays host to Downeyville at 3 p.m. Wednesday and North Tahoe on Thursday. “I think we can go into the Christmas break with a 3-3 record,” Wines said.

Melissa Maxwell and Tiffany Good led South Tahoe with 18 and nine points, respectively.
