Whittell boys basketball team to host Australian youth league tonight

Weather permitting, the George Whittell High boys basketball team will play host to a barnstorming Australian Youth team tonight at 7 in Zephyr Cove.

The team, which began its trip in Los Angeles, has traveled up through California, stopping in Sacramento to take on Jesuit on Wednesday.

After playing the Warriors, the team will make a stop at Hawthorne before ending its tour in Las Vegas.

During their visit to the South Shore, the Australians will stay at Harveys Resort & Casino. The school will also host their opponents for a dinner and Karaoke night on Friday.

“We don’t know anything about them,” Warrior coach Steve Maltase said. “But it will be a good chance for the kids to get out there and work on some things.”

The Warriors are coming into the exhibition with a 58-40 loss to Virginia City on Tuesaday night.

Nick Summers paced the Warriors with 17 points, while Bryan Sigel added 11.

“They just outhustled us,” Maltase said. “It wasn’t a matter of athletic talent or anything, we just played lethargic out there.”
