Whittell boys lose three in a row

Whittell’s boys lost their third Northern Nevada 3A Division II basketball game in a row, falling 58-43 at Lovelock on Saturday.

“I think that (Lovelock) made some adjustments, and they felt like they could get us sleeping, and they did,” said Whittell head coach Steve Maltase.

The Mustangs (8-1 in Division II, 10-10 overall) outscored the Warriors 20-6 in the third quarter. Whittell (4-5 in Division II, 8-12 overall) saw a four-point halftime deficit become double digits in a hurry.

“We just kind of panicked and didn’t take care of the ball,” Maltase said.

Jason Allen, the Mustangs’ top rebounder, was their best scoring threat on Saturday, finishing with a game-high 16 points, and John Grenz added 14 more. Avery Norman led Whittell with 11 points, while Todd Echan and Kyle Spingola had eight each.

Whittell was once 4-2 in conference play, with a large cushion. Now the Warriors are battling Yerington (4-6 in Division II) and Dayton (3-6) for position. That makes the final three division home games – against Bishop Manogue, Hawthorne and Lovelock – that much more important. The final homestand begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Manogue, which is unbeaten in conference play.

“I think for us to take third, we need to win two of three games, and that’s our goal,” Maltase said.
