Whittell boys’ soccer team goes 1-2 in Winnemucca tourney

The Whittell Warriors won one game but lost two others at a nonleague boys’ soccer tournament in Winnemucca Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Warriors were beaten 4-1 by Fernley in the opening game of pool play. Tim Prebezac picked up the team’s lone goal in that match.

However, Whittell bounced back to beat Lowry 1-0 on a goal by Justin Darrow.

The team took second in the pool and went on to play a third-place game against Battle Mountain, which the Warriors lost 2-1. Italo Ferreira got the team’s goal in that match.

“It thought our play was inconsistent,” said Warriors coach Steve Maltase. “I thought we probably beat the best team there in Lowry, but I wasn’t too pleased with our other two games. Our effort and intensity level needs to be better for the complete game.”

The Warriors play Tuesday at Dayton and on Thursday at Manogue.
