Whittell drops first scrimmage of season

Staff report

Chris Shapiro, Marcus Mellberg, Jeff Young and Brian Peate combined to pitch seven innings while walking only one batter in a loss to Douglas on Monday at Douglas High.

Shapiro fanned five of the seven batters he faced.

It was the Warriors’ first scrimmage of the season. The 2004 Northern 2A regional runner-up might have another scrimmage on Wednesday, but coach Don Amaral isn’t sure at this point.

What he is sure about is the prospect of this year’s team.

“I was real pleased with what I saw today,” Amaral said. “We threw away some balls and things like that, but those are things that are to be expected right now. We’ll have to work out those kinks.”

The two teams were tight throughout, but the 4A Douglas eventually posted an unofficial 9-4 victory.

“This was basically a small school vs. big school type of thing, and I thought our guys did the best they could,” Amaral said. “I’m real excited about this season.”
