Whittell girls hoops roll over Sparks
Although the Whittell High Warriors got scoring from several sources against Sparks on Monday night, it was their defense that spurred them to victory over the Railroaders.
Sophomore Jessica Woods had 15 points and seven steals, while Ariana Rodriguez had 10 points and five steals as Whittell rolled to a 49-18 nonleague in Sparks.
The Warriors (4-2) held 3A Sparks to just six points in the second half after leading 22-12 at halftime. Whittell got six points from both Whitney Gielow and Kelly Karmann. Karmann also added 12 rebounds in the win, while Katrina Kacirek pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds to go with her five points and seven steals.
“We really kind of ran away with it in the second half,” said coach Nathan Tolbert, whose team commited only four fouls overall. “They were not as fast as we were, so it was nice to use our speed against somebody.”
Whittell (4-2) doesn’t play again until the Holiday Challenge next week in Reno. The Warriors open with Douglas and Reed on Monday, then play Lovelock on Tuesday morning in the final game of pool play.
Whittell JVs stay undefeated
The Whittell Warriors’ JV boys basketball team stayed undefeated following a 71-56 win over Fernley last Friday.
Jeff Young scored a game-high 26 points in the win, Jonathan Sosa had 12 and Jeremy Dominguez and David Sabatini both chipped in with seven points.
Whittell now is 3-0 on the season. It defeated Battle Mountain and Incline last weekend at the Lovelock Tournament.
