YERINGTON, Nev. — Ahead of its highly anticipated showdown with South Tahoe, the Whittell girls soccer team produced a lopsided road victory. The Warriors beat Yerington 9-0 on Wednesday to extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches to start the 2014 season.

Whittell (9-0, 7-0 Northern West IV) scored four goals in the first half against the Lions in the blowout victory. Forward Ali Copsy scored a hat trick in the win to go along with an assist.

Three players delivered two-goal performances for Whittell on Wednesday — forward Mikayla Warner, forward Samantha Forvilly and midfielder Gigi Stetler. Forvilly and Stetler added an assist apiece — Midfielders Gisselle Benitez and Madison Idso also had helpers.

In net, goalkeeper Taimani Hussey stopped two shots to shut out Yerington (2-10, 1-6). The shutout was Whittell’s seventh of the season.

Whittell heads into its match at South Tahoe on Saturday riding a nine-match winning streak. During the streak, the Warriors have outscored their opposition 69-3 — Copsy has tallied a team-leading 19 goals, with Stetler and Kenya Maltase scoring 11 each.

Whittell and South Tahoe met twice last season — the Warriors won the second meeting 2-1 after a 1-1 tie in the first match. The two teams renew their rivalry at Viking Stadium on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
