Whittell Golf

Two scores in the 70s and not one in the 90s spelled out a very successful golf tournament for Whittell High last Friday at Mason Valley Golf Course in Yerington.

“They played well,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase. “There was nine new holes (at Mason Valley) so that was a little rought, but it was a great day for golf.”

Keith Truswell fired a 3-over-par 75 and Ryan Salomon shot a 79 to lead the Warriors to a third-place finish in a 13-team 3A-2A tournament.

“We’re going to have to pick it up a little to get second or first,” Truswell said. “We have to step it up if we want some trophies.”

Manogue won with a five-player team score of 385. Lowry was second with 397 and Whittell fourth with a season-best 409.

Truswell won last year’s event at Mason Valley but one club prevented him from repeating his title.

“My flat stick wasn’t rolling them in,” said Truswell, who won last year’s event with a career-best 72. “I had tons of birdie chances. I only missed five greens and one fairway.”

The scores were also solid behind Truswell and Salomon. Patrick Flanagan led three players in the 80s with an 81. Parker Fox shot 85 and Cary White 89.

Whittell plays Thursday at Rosewood Lakes in Reno.
