Whittell golfers off to good start

Even though it was just a preseason tournament, Whittell High’s golf team was in postseason form on Friday at the Mineral County Invitational in Hawthorne.

The Warriors shot an 18-hole team total of 413, just three behind Truckee. Chris Casteleyn led the way with a 76, followed by Chad Kolpacoff 78, Rocco Bruno 80, Scott Rahbeck 87, Joe Weadick 92 and Eric Acevedo 96.

“They looked like they want to go out and prove something,” said coach Richard Brandt. “We were first from the teams in our division. It’s only preseason, but we were all smiles.”

After Truckee and Whittell, Incline was third at 431, Manogue and Spring Creek 437, Hawthorne 448, Yerington 458, North Tahoe 463, Fernley 484, Battle Mountain 489, Dayton 500 and Round Mountain 605.

Only the top two teams from each division qualify for the state playoffs this season. Brandt said for the first time out, he was excited about the Warriors’ prospects.

“All in all, they did a great job. Everyone has to do their part. You never know whose score is going to be scratched,” he said.
