Whittell opens season on Saturday

The Whittell Warriors open the 2005 season on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Northern 2A opponent Hawthorne. Although the team’s roster only increased by a few players this week, Whittell is confident going into its home opener.

“I think we have a pretty good chance,” said coach Dennis Young. “I think we’re ahead of last year. Our defense is a lot better than last year and our offense is coming around. It should be pretty interesting. Our kids are ready.”

The Warriors, who went 0-7 in 2004, get their first crack at the Serpents since a 45-0 loss last year. However, it’s an entirely different Hawthorne team.

The Serpents return five starters from last year’s 3-5 squad and also have a new head coach in Richard Dudley. His coaching debut started with a 42-0 loss to Faith Lutheran last week. Young, though, figures Dudley will look to rebound against his Warriors.

“Hawthorne is usually a pretty decent team,” Young said. “I was surprised by the (Faith Lutheran) score when I saw it. They’re still going to be decent and we’re still going to have to play. But I feel that we have a pretty good shot.”

In other Northern 2A action, Yerington plays at Independence and Battle Mountain hosts Silver Stage. Both games are today.

Young’s comments on girls:

“They had some girls on that team last year,” Young said. “My guys don’t care if they play against girls. They just play like they normally would.”
