Whittell prepares for league leader

The Warriors play West Wendover today at 3 p.m. and face the strongest Northern 2A League team.

The Wolverines are undefeated in league at 2-0 and 5-0 overall. Earlier this year they defeated Battle Mountain, last year’s undefeated 2A Northern league champion.

Whittell head coach Mike Evans scouted the Wolverines against White Pine on Aug. 30. He said their strongest offensive threat was James Nichols, the 220-pound, 6-foot-2 fullback.

Evans said the Wolverines use Nichols 95 percent of the time they run the ball.

“He’s very solid,” he said. “We want to get penetration on the I-back and stop Nichols before he gets started. Once he gets started he’s a load to bring down so we want to get to him in the backfield.”

Evans said the Wolverines play a four-man front on defense, which will be a good thing for the trio of Alex Swearingen, Christian Anton and Jake Summers, the Warriors’ primary ball carriers.

“On offense, we’re going to try to pound it off-tackle a little bit more than we have,” Evans said. “It’s tough to get outside. The corners force everything inside.”

The Warrior will likely try to move wide receivers Matt Johnson and Brian Jones to the corners to keep them away from the Wolverines’ safeties.

The Warriors are 1-1 in league and 2-2 overall.

The team is healthy, except for Brian Barnard, who has been resting his elbow.

Senior lineman Joe Ilk is back in the lineup. The Warriors plan to tape his shoulder and play him at left tackle.
