Whittell skiers honored

Michael Traum

Whittell High Alpine skiers Corky Novotny and Todd Echan capped superb years on Tuesday by each finishing second in the Tahoe Basin League championships at Diamond Peak.

The two freshman earned their way into the finals round of 16 with strong early performances. Once among the top 16, the skiers competed in a head-to-head pro format – the athlete with the best two-run time moving on.

In addition, Echan and Novotny were also selected to the Tahoe Basin League all-conference team.

“It looks like we’ve got a future,” said Whittell advisor Mike Kiger.

Rocco Bruno was fifth in the championships. Bryce Schussel and Georgia Novotny just missed the finals, finishing in 17th place. Scott Rahbeck was 18th, Trevor Bartholomew 20th, Lindsay Moores 25th and Amber Merkel 28th.

The Warriors and Squaw Valley Academy ended the league season in a third-place tie overall, behind Truckee and North Tahoe. Douglas was fifth and Incline was sixth.

“It’s really great to see. The kids did a nice job,” Kiger said.
