Whittell softball beats Smith Valley 14-4, wins eighth straight

SMITH, Nev. — The Whittell softball team inched closer to a postseason berth Tuesday while keeping its winning streak alive. The Warriors beat Smith Valley 14-4 on the road in six innings to win their eighth consecutive contest.

Whittell (13-7, 8-4 IV Northern) shook a slow start Tuesday to enact the 10-run rule. The Warriors broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the top of the third inning, and had a 6-3 lead over the Bulldogs after four frames.

The Warriors combined for eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach. After scoring five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 14-3 lead, Whittell held Smith Valley (0-12, 0-10) to one run in the bottom half to seal the victory.



Whittell had nine hits on Tuesday, led by Dominique Ogilvie’s two-hit afternoon — Ogilvie went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run. Seven Warriors collected one hit apiece against the Bulldogs — Kaitlyn Kjer went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Kelsey Kjer went 1-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.

Daria Sharon scored a team-high three runs on Tuesday to go along with a hit and an RBI. Madison Idso and Ali Copsy each had a hit, an RBI and two runs, Jordyn Becker finished with a hit and an RBI and Tatum Libert added a hit and a run.



In the circle, Kelsey Kjer (W, 10-6) threw 98 pitches in a six-inning complete game. The junior allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits, striking out nine and walking two.

Whittell returned to action Thursday in a doubleheader at Virginia City, and had the chance to clinch a postseason berth with a split against the Muckers. The Warriors conclude the regular season Tuesday against crosstown rival South Tahoe at Zephyr Cove Park — first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
