Who needs a full team to finish in the top three?

Matt O'Neill

With only five skiers competing in the race, the South Tahoe Viking Nordic ski team managed a pair of third-place finishes Friday at Tahoe Donner Cross country ski center.

The Vikings took third in both the junior varsity boys and girls events. The boys were able to finish in the top three by having all three of their skiers finish in the top-11. Ansel Robinson paced the Vikings with his second-place finish, while Ryan MacLoed was 10th and Chris Detarr rounded out the scoring with his 11th-place finish.

“They did very well on a long course,” Viking coach Julia Peyser said. “There was a long uphill in the middle that they had to contend with.”

The other third-place finish was a one-person show. Samantha Urch was the only girl competitor for the Vikings, and her seventh-place finish was good enough to secure a third-place team finish.

“She did a great job for us,” Peyser said. “Especially since it was only her out representing the whole team.”

Another lone gun for the Viking was Jeff Keock on the varsity boys’ side. As the only competitor for South Tahoe, Keock wasn’t able to post a team score despite finishing the top-10.

As week after qualifying for the Junior Olympics, Keock turned around and turned in a time of 26 minutes to finish in seventh place.

Next up for the Vikings is a trip to Lake Tahoe Cross-Country park in North Tahoe on Friday. Peyser is to hoping to have a full squad for that race.

“We should have everyone back,” she said. “All I’m requiring is three practices during the week.”
