WHS drop two league games

The hurdles for the Whittell boys’ basketball team continue to rise. After playing several games this season without some of their top players, the Warriors were short-handed again for two key Northern 2A games on Friday and Saturday.

Missing their leading scorer, Rite of Passage beat Whittell 85-51 on Friday night in Yerington. Then on Saturday in Zephyr Cove, the Warriors were again missing their leading scorer and also another starter in a loss to Hawthorne.

“We have to gut it out,” said WHS coach Brian Mehrer. “We really don’t have a choice. At this point, we are definitely getting the incoming freshman lost of playing time. We aren’t giving up on the season, but we need to start looking at future plans a little bit.”

Jordan Morgan, a 6-foot-4 post player, was injured during Friday night’s loss. He will have an MRI today to determine the extent of his injury.

Christian Hernandez, Whittell’s leading scorer, has missed the past several games for personnel issues and his return to the team is unknown.

Whittell (7-9 overall, 0-5 league) plays at Lovelock on Friday, then hosts Silver Stage in another league game on Saturday.
