The Heavenly Freestyle Team competed in divisional championships at Squaw Valley Resort on March 1-2 — the first local event of the year due to this season’s lack of snow. The Heavenly and Squaw teams have spent most of the season traveling to other states to compete.

The skiers completed a two-run singles event on Saturday in white-out conditions, and a one-run singles event Sunday morning and duals on Sunday afternoon. Taryn Baker returned from competing on the NorAm Tour to defend her Far West title. The 16-year-old topped the podium in both singles and duals.

In Saturday’s singles, Baker scored an outstanding 20.14. Gabbi Fisher, 13, narrowly missed the podium with a score of 15.88 for fourth place. Mia Idzorek, 13, was 10th (12.68). Karli Anderson, 10, was 20th (6.07).

Baker placed 1st in the one-run singles ladies event on Sunday with a score of 19.44. Fisher was 4th (16.11), Mia Idzorek was 7th (12.87), and Anderson was 15th (8.55).

Zach Shearer, 16, celebrated his first trip up the podium with a 3rd (19.13) in Saturday’s singles men’s event. Shanti Payne, 16, landed in fifth (17.23) with a cork 720 and a loop; Dean Ambrosi, 14, was 10th (11.91); Range Chapman, 12, ended up 12th (11.00); Jake Brand, 8, was 22nd (7.76) and Tom Idzorek placed 26th (6.24).

On Sunday, Shearer placed 2nd (20.1) with loop and a backflip in the men’s singles; Payne, with the fastest run, was 4th (16.45); Ambrosi was 8th (13.01) with a 360 and a big triple twister, Chapman was 9th (10.7), Brand was 19th (7.66) and Tom Idzorek was 23rd (6.7).

In the afternoon men‘s duals battle, Shearer came out on top in first place for his first Far West Division Duals Title. Payne was fourth, Ambrosi was sixth, Chapman was 10th, Tom Idzorek was 20th and Brand was 24th.

Baker completed her sweep in women’s duals Sunday with another first. Mia Idzorek was fifth; Fisher was seventh and Anderson was 17th overall and won the Devo group.

Heavenly Freestyle Team head coach Travis Woodcock was happy with the team’s performances in such challenging conditions.

“To keep both Far West duals titles at Heavenly is a great accomplishment for the small Heavenly Team,” said Woodcock.

“To come away as overall Division Champions against some serious competition shows what a talented group we have. The Heavenly Freestyle team took home many medals in age groups, as well,” he said.

Heavenly’s top juniors have traveled to Park City, Utah, for the Junior National Freestyle Championships. Taryn Baker, Gabbi Fisher, Mia Idzorek, Shanti Payne, Zach Shearer and Dean Ambrosi will compete at Park City Mountain Resort March 13-16.
