Wise to compete in JOs in Alaska

South Tahoe High School Nordic skier David Wise will join 34 athletes representing the Far West region this week at the 2008 USSA Cross Country Junior Olympics in Anchorage, Alaska.

Wise, a sophomore at STHS, competed in four JO qualifying races to be selected to the Far West team. He will compete in four events: 1,250-meter classic sprint, 5K classic, 5K freestyle skate and 3K freestyle relay.

WHS golfers all break 90 in Hawthorne

All six members of the Whittell High golf team shots in the 80s as the Warriors finished third out of 13 teams at tournament Friday in Hawthorne.

Whittell finished behind larger classification schools Truckee and Manogue in the 18-hole event. Team scores were Truckee 391, Manogue 402, Whittell 428, Yerington 431, Fernley 438, Battle Mountain 477, Dayton 520, Round Mountain 525, Tonopah 545, Hawthorne 555, Wells 571 and ROP 617.

Tyler Fairbank led Whittell’s individual scoring with an 83. He was closely followed by Trevor Fairbank 85, Michael Koskin 86, John Szendrey 87, T.J. Kolesnik 87 and Geoff Caliger 88.

“I’m definitely excited about it,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase. “We have better scores this time of year than we did last year at this time with a pretty good team.”

Whittell will play at a tournament hosted by Manogue today at 11 a.m. at Lakeridge in Reno.
