Wood, Coast Conference champions to hit the road in NorCal tournament opener

South Tahoe High alum Jared Wood scored 12 points in Cabrillo College’s Coast Conference title-clinching 78-76 men’s basketball victory at Monterey Peninsula last Wednesday.

It marked the second straight conference championship for Cabrillo and the second in the 49-year history of the school.

The Seahawks, ranked 14th in California, led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but Monterey made a furious rally in the closing minutes. Monterey’s Jermaine Carter actually had a chance to tie the game but he could not finish his length-of-the-court drive to the basket.

Cabrillo (22-8 overall, 11-1 conference) finished its regular season with an 81-70 triumph over West Valley on Saturday night. Wood had 10 points in his final regular-season game for the Seahawks.

On Monday, the Coast Conference announced that Wood was given honorable mention by league’s seven coaches.

Next up for the Seahawks is the NorCal state tournament, which starts Friday. Despite winning its conference title, 10th-seeded Cabrillo must travel to Fremont to play seventh-seeded Ohlone College. Game time is 7 p.m.
