Wood delivering for Cabrillo

Eleven games into his sophomore season at Cabrillo College, Jared Wood is contributing for the Seahawks.

Wood, a 6-foot-5 guard from South Lake Tahoe, has been consistently scoring in double figures for Cabrillo (6-5).

The former all-league player at South Tahoe High has a high game of 17 points against Reedley College in the Porterville Shootout. He also scored 16 in a 64-51 defeat to Diablo Valley, 14 points in a 70-47 trouncing of Feather River, 14 points in a 81-77 triumph over Contra Costa and 11 points in a 78-44 win over Merritt College in the John Wallace Memorial Tournament.

Wood hit two crucial free throw attempts in the final minute to ice the win over Contra Costa. He connected for four three-point shots against Diablo Valley.

The Seahawks finished second in their own tournament last weekend, losing to Chabot Gladiators of Hayward 69-59. Cabrillo advanced to the final with an 81-69 victory over Butte.

Cabrillo is the defending Coast Conference champions and has many components of that team back for the 2007-08 season.

“I do feel good about this team,” said Cabrillo coach Tony Marcopulos. “They have worked extremely hard this summer. I believe that work will pay off for them in more ways than one.”

Wood was a Northern 4A Region first-team selection in 2005-06 as he led South Tahoe to its only winning season n the past seven seasons. The Vikings were 15-12 that year and qualified for the Northern Nevada 4A regional tournament.
