Woods, Kacirek lead Whittell to blowout win in home opener
Still smarting from its “close” loss to South Tahoe on Saturday, Whittell took out its frustrations against North Tahoe on Monday night in Zephyr Cove.
Jessica Woods and Katrina Kacirek each scored 15 points and Sarah Ingenluyff recorded nine points and four assists, as the Warriors beat the Lakers 67-29 at Whittell High School.
“We played excellent and did everything we wanted to do,” said Whittell coach Nathan Tolbert. “We certainly felt we were as good as South Tahoe. We just kind of ran out of gas. That didn’t happen against North Tahoe.”
The Warriors (1-1) opened up a 38-15 halftime lead and then held North Tahoe to just four points in the third quarter. Whitney Gielow finished with four points and game-high nine assists, while Ariana Rodriguez had seven points and five assists. Sophomore Kelly Karmann chipped in with nine points.
“It was incredible,” Tolbert said. “It was as good as I could’ve expected them to play. These girls play so well together. It’s a totally different atmosphere from last year. We’re excited to keep having fun and keep this going.”
Whittell plays in the four-team Antelope Valley Invitational this weekend in Coleville. The Warriors open with Gerlach at 3 p.m. in the first semifinal, while Coleville takes on Big Pine in the other semifinal. The championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
