Wooster deals Vikings a deadly blow in volleyball action

Matt O'Neill, Tribune sports writer

South Tahoe might have seen the end of their season with a crucial five-game loss to Wooster on Tuesday in Reno.

The two teams went into the match battling for the third and fourth spots for the zone playoffs, but the 15-13, 18-20, 15-11, 11-15, 11-15 defeat dropped the Vikings into fifth place and on the outside looking in.

“It was a war, ” Vikings coach Gary Hankoff said. “It took two-and-half hours to complete it.”

The Vikings were led by the strong play of Jessica Dilegame and Rachel Hankoff, both of whom had double-doubles. Dilegame recorded 19 kills with 21 digs, while Hankoff had 15 and 10. Freshman Myrna Sanchez had 10 kills and Jessica Urreaga recorded 12 kills.

“Myrna played the best she’s played this season in the first couple of games,” Hankoff said. “We just had trouble closing out games tonight.”

Next up for the Vikings is a cross-border war tonight with Whittell for South Shore bragging rights. But Hankoff is more worried about Thursday’s matchup with Carson.

“We’re treating the Whittell game like a practice game,” Hankoff said. “We need to fix some problems with our rotations. “
