Yarrow, Kropf lead STHS over Damonte

Zach Kropf went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Stephen Yarrow went 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI as the South Tahoe High baseball team beat Damonte Ranch 9-6 in the Sierra Division opener for both teams Thursday in Reno.

Kropf pitched 3 2/3 innings and got credit for the win. David Schue pitched three innings – including two scoreless – and Yarrow earned the save in the seventh inning. The Vikings improved to 2-1 overall on the season.

“They were a lot like us,” STHS coach Matt Tillson said of the Mustangs. “They have a lot of juniors. But I was pretty happy with our performance.”

South Tahoe jumped out a 4-0 lead in the first, helped by Kropf’s two-run double. After Damonte Ranch scored two runs in the bottom of the first, the Vikings extended their lead to 6-2 following Ian Rice’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Buck Pershing.

Rice and Pershing combined for five hits and four RBI in the game. Kevin Yelles went 2 for 4 with a double for the Vikings, who suffered a scary moment in the fourth inning after a ground ball took a bad hop and smashed into Yarrow’s face.

While he threw the runner out at first and played the rest of the game, Yarrow had his jaw examined for broken bones Thursday after the game. Tillson expects to know by Friday the extent of Yarrow’s injury.

South Tahoe plays a doubleheader at Damonte Ranch starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Reno.
