Yerington girls roll past Whittell

Amy Sceirine and Brandy Smith combined for 35 points Wednesday as the Yerington High girls ran off with a 74-31 home basketball win against division foe Whittell.

The Lions jumped out to a 19-9 lead and never looked back, improving their second-place Northern Nevada 3A Division II girls basketball record to 7-2 (16-6 overall). Whittell now is 0-7.

“Our defensive transition got everything going, then we started getting some production from our post people and then we started hitting some 3’s,” Yerington coach Brett Edmunds said. “We just played a good basketball game.”

Sceirine scored 18 points and Smith 17 to lead Yerington offensively. Letitia Talbot added 13 and Echo Conway 11 for the Lions.

Caitlin Fagan accounted for most of Whittell’s offensive production with 18 points, including 8-for-10 free throw shooting.

Whittell returns to action on Saturday with a 6 p.m. game at Lovelock, the third of the week for the Warriors.
