Yerington wins battle of state champs
For one game, the four-time defending Nevada 2A state champion Whittell High volleyball team showed it belonged on the court with reigning 3A titlists Yerington on Monday night.
But after winning the first game 25-23, the Lions drilled the Warriors 25-17, 25-5, 25-15 in Yerington.
Whittell’s mistakes and Yerington star Kayla Lommory determined the outcome. The Warriors had 21 hitting errors to go along with 20 kills, five missed serves and only three aces and 10 blocks against 12 errant blocks.
“The biggest enemy is trying to get by our mistakes,” said Whittell coach Dan McLaughlin. “When we play without mistakes and with intensity, we’re good.”
Stats weren’t available on Lommory, but the junior controlled the match.
“She had a terrific game. She was hurt earlier (in the year), and now she’s 100 percent, plain back on track and a force,” McLaughlin said.
Jordan Reeder led the Warriors with 11 kills, four blocks and seven digs. In addition, Kendra Koskin had four kills, an ace, two digs and block; Lauren Andrew contributed three kills, two aces, three blocks and four digs; Brette Harrington made 11 digs; Brittany Makara delivered three kills and five digs; and Isabel Concha-Foley collected a kill and two blocks.
Whittell (11-5 overall) plays at Incline today at 5 p.m.
The Warriors’ junior varsity lost25-23, 25-19.
