Young triathletes excel in Davis
Four South Lake Tahoe triathletes recorded top-10 finishes in the first annual California Kids Triathlon last Sunday in Davis.
Casey Willitts cruised to a fifth-place overall result in the girls’ 11-12 age group, finishing her swim, bike and run in 19 minutes, 35 seconds. Carlsbad’s Ellie Abrahamson was the winner in 17:02.
In the same 66-competitor field as Willitts, South Lake Tahoe’s Annie Genasci placed 13th in 20:53.
The remaining South Shore participants cracking the top 10 were Brandon Reinhard, sixth, boys’ 13 and 14 division; Brooke King, seventh, girls’ 9-10 age group; and Allison King, eighth, girls’ 7-8 division.
Reinhard, a veteran of the sport, was timed in 26:12, less than 2 minutes behind winner Kevin Green of Santa Maria.
Brooke King’s division included 94 competitors and her time of 16:45 was only a little more than 2:00 behind first-place finisher Sarah Orders of Arcata.
King’s younger sister, Allison, was in an even busier division as she was timed in 13:14. Melissa Seaman of Cupertino took first at 11:43.
South Lake Tahoe brothers Dustin and Denver Orr competed in the largest divisions. Dustin was 74th out of a field of 144 in the 7-8 boys’ class and Denver placed 32nd in a boys’ 6-and-under group of 121.
The regional growth of the sport among the younger set has upgraded the Davis Kids Triathlon into one of the largest kids’ triathlon’s in the country. More than 1,000 children participated on Sunday.
