Youth doesn’t serve Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Stars well

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

With a surplus of 13-year-olds and a shortage of seasoned 15-year-olds, the South Lake Tahoe 13-15 Babe Ruth All-Stars were overmatched during their two-day tournament stay in Fallon.

South Lake Tahoe lost 16-1 to Reno West on Saturday and were eliminated by host Fallon 14-4 Sunday.

“We were the only team playing 13- and 14-year-olds. Our kids played tough, but we couldn’t match up with them,” said South Lake Tahoe manager Don Amaral. “We can field a 15-year-old team next year and maybe we can put the hurt on some of these teams.”

Reno West put away South Lake Tahoe with a nine-run fourth inning. South Lake Tahoe scored its only run in the top of the fourth when Harrison Elkins reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a passed ball and came home on Justin Keys’ single.

Amaral was pleased with the pitching effort of Tyson Cunningham, who gave up 15 runs in 3 2/3 innings.

“I counted 23 outs. We didn’t make the plays,” said Amaral, who was assisted by his Whittell High players Brandon Lee and Matt Olsen.

Fallon scored three runs in each of the first three innings to put South Lake Tahoe in a tough spot Sunday.

Keys, 13, collected two of Tahoe’s five hits. Adam Fountain, Cameron Nuslein and J.J. DeLallo contributed one hit.

Nuslein, Keys and Cunningham pitched for South Lake Tahoe.
