Authorities have identified a man who was found dead at Northstar California Thursday after apparently falling headfirst into a tree well.

The victim was identified late Friday as Michael North, 43, of New Canaan, Connecticut. North died in what Northstar officials called “a serious incident,” according statement emailed to the Sierra Sun early Friday morning.

Northstar Ski Patrol responded to a ski incident on advanced terrain, where the guest had been skiing at the resort,” according to the statement released by Marcie Bradley, senior communications manager for Northstar California. “Northstar Fire Department provided further emergency care and pronounced the man deceased.”

The statement incorrectly stated the guest, now known to be North, had been skiing. The resort later corrected that stating that North had been snowboarding.

Northstar California has not released any additional details about the incident.
