A San Jose-area pastor, who was found unresponsive in the middle of a run at Sierra-at-Tahoe, died from a heart attack, according to the family.

Pastor Craig Jutila, 53, was found unresponsive in the Powderhorn Trail around 1:47 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Jutila was ultimately pronounced dead by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sierra-at-Tahoe.

The resort said it was unclear what happened prior Jutila being found.

Venture Christian Church in Los Gatos, California, where Jutila served as a family pastor, described the incident as a “tragic skiing accident” in an email to parishioners.

In an effort to clarify the cause of death, Jutila’s wife, Mary, wrote on Facebook that the cause of death was a heart attack.

“First of all Craig Jutila was an amazing athlete and I wanted to clear up the cause of his death,” Mary wrote. “We got the autopsy results back today and it confirmed that there was no trauma…he did not have a snowboarding accident. He died of a heart attack. He was not being reckless in any way, in fact he was going slow to ski with me and I believe he was waiting for me to catch up (as usual) because of where I found him.”

Jutila is survived by Mary and their children, Alec, Cameron and Karimy.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at Venture Christian Church Worship Center. The church will be live streaming the service.
