Groundbreaking set for future Whole Foods location in South Lake Tahoe
An official groundbreaking for the future Bijou Marketplace is set for Monday, Aug. 7, according to the city of South Lake Tahoe.
Thursday’s announcement comes nearly five months after the city reached an agreement with the owner of the former Knights Inn property.
The agreement essentially pulled the trigger on a project — at one time known as the Bijou Park Creek Watershed Management project — that was four years in the making. The project has since been re-branded the Bijou Marketplace.
In 2016 it was revealed that Whole Foods had signed on with Halferty Development Company, the company seeking to purchase and develop those parcels able to be developed, as the main tenant with its lower-priced 365 store.
In its press release, the city did not mention Whole Foods. Instead, it stated that officials with Bijou Marketplace LLC, the owner of the project, would be announcing the main tenant at the groundbreaking.
However, following the announcement in June that Amazon was buying Whole Foods, officials said the sale would not impact future plans, including the planned Whole Foods 365 South Lake Tahoe location.
The groundbreaking will take place on Monday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. The public is invited.
