Missing hiker found in Desolation Wilderness

A Missing hiker reunited with his friends after spending a night in the wilderness.

El Dorado County Sheriff deputies, along with Search and Rescue and the California Highway Patrol’s H-20 helicopter coordinated a search for a missing hiker inside Desolation Wilderness Friday.

The hiker became separated from his friends near Lake of the Woods. He had left all his gear with his friends and had no overnight gear. He was minimally clothed, only wearing shorts and a T-shirt. The missing hiker’s friends attempted to hike out that night for help but could not make it all the way out due to cold temperatures and current snow conditions. The missing hiker was located today with the assistance of the helicopter.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office reminds all backcountry enthusiast to go into the backcountry prepared for the forecasted weather, terrain hazards like snow, fast moving water and mud.

Have a plan and stick to the plan. Never separate from your hiking partners and never leave important survival gear behind, even if just taking a short hike away.
