Heavenly reports 10 inches of snow overnight
Heavenly Mountain Resort reported receiving 10 inches of snow over 24 hours on Sunday morning as a weekend winter storm settled into the Sierra Nevada above Carson Valley.
Chain controls are in effect across Western Nevada’s higher elevations, including Spooner Summit and Kingsbury Grade, where it was snowing around 8 a.m.
Highway 50 was white with snow in places where the Nevada Department of Transportation broke out the grader to do snow removal over Spooner Summit.
Workers heading to Heavenly on Sunday morning took Kingsbury Grade slowly as the road was covered in snow, much of which fell overnight.
A winter storm warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
With the snow level around 5,900 feet and a forecast high temperature of 47 degrees, it’s unlikely Carson Valley will receive snow on Sunday.
That might change early Monday morning with the snow level dropping to 4,800 feet after midnight.
“The better chance to see morning commute disruptions will be Monday morning, just ahead of daybreak,” National Weather Service Reno Meteorologist Heather Richards said early Sunday. “Snow amounts on valley floors would be limited to around a trace.”
Looking ahead, there’s a slight chance of rain or snow into the middle of the week, clearing Thursday.
“Amounts will be light and more of the nuisance variety in terms of impacts,” Richards said. “Thursday will be dry as we say goodbye to unsettled weather, with gusty ridge winds early morning of up to 50 mph.”
After that high pressure will return bringing calm winds and dry weather with temperatures nearing 5 degrees above average by Jan. 15.
