RENO (AP) – The sports utility vehicle Darren Mack allegedly fled in after killing his wife and shooting a judge in June has been recovered in Mexico and returned to Reno, where investigators hope to search it for clues on Thursday, police said.

The 2006 Ford Explorer that police say Mack rented from Budget Rent-a-Car was discovered at a parking garage in Ensenada, Mexico, near the United States border, police said Wednesday.

It was found by a private investigator working to find vehicles stolen from the rental agency. Reno police detectives traveled there and towed it back to the Washoe County Crime Lab late Tuesday night, authorities said.

Investigators hope to obtain a search warrant today to begin combing the vehicle for clues. So far, they have been unable to find the knife used in the slashing death of Mack’s estranged wife, Charla, the gun used in the sniper shooting of the family court judge handling their divorce, Chuck Weller, or any casings from the bullets.

Weller was shot in the chest on June 12 but has since recovered from his injuries.

The SUV was in a long-term parking garage where Mack allegedly paid to store it for a month.

Mack, 45, is scheduled to appear in Washoe County District Court today for a hearing on a number of motions, including his lawyers’ request for him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Police told KOLO-TV they believe Mack abandoned the car in Ensenada the day he killed his wife and shot Weller through a courthouse window from a parking garage 300 yards away.

They suspect he then took a bus to La Paz and Cabo San Lucas and – after a trip back to La Paz – took a boat or ferry to Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan

Mack surrendered to authorities in Puerto Vallarta on June 22 after an 11-day manhunt. He’s being held in the Washoe Count Jail without bail.
