Snowboarder Jamie Anderson questionable for Winter X Games
A halfpipe accident in Europe has raised the question of whether Jamie Anderson will compete in the upcoming Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo.
Anderson, the two-time defending Winter X Games snowboard slopestyle champion, severely bruised her hip and pelvis last week during halfpipe qualifying at the Burton European Championships in Laax, Switzerland. She was rushed to the hospital following the spill on her second run of the competition. The injury kept Anderson out of the slopestyle event the next day.
Knowing her daughter as well as she does, Lauren Anderson expects “Jammin Jamie” to compete in at least the slopestyle competition, which begins Friday at Buttermilk Mountain.
“I couldn’t imagine her sitting out,” Lauren said.
Anderson is entered in both the slopestyle and superpipe events.
The 18-year-old Anderson is expected to test the hip today, riding for the first time since last Wednesday.
“I think she can ride better than she can walk,” Lauren said.
The Sierra-at-Tahoe rider has won the past two slopestyle gold medals at Winter X. Anderson still holds the distinction of being the youngest X Games competitor ever, competing in boardercross at age 13 in 2004.
Joanie receives late invite
While the outlook is iffy for Jamie, older sister Joanie Anderson has been granted a late entry into Friday and Saturday’s boardercross competition.
Joanie won the boardercross gold medal in 2007 but struggled last year, qualifying 16th and not making the final.
Tahoe well-represented
In addition to the Anderson sisters, the South Shore will have at least three other resident competitors to root for in the four-day competition. Three-time boardercross gold medalist Shaun Palmer, 40, has been invited to compete, as well as snowboarder superpipe riders Elena Hight and Hannah Teter.
Six Truckee residents will also compete: Anik Demers-Wild, skiercross; Andy Finch, snowboard superpipe; Chas Guldemond, snowboard slopestyle; Nate Holland, boardercross; Errol Kerr, skiercross; and former World Cup downhill star Daron Rahlves, skiercross.
New sponsors for Hight
Excuse Hight for looking ahead to next month’s final Winter Dew Tour stop at Northstar-at-Tahoe.
Not only does the Feb. 19-22 serve as a home competition for Hight, but Hight is now employed by Northstar. The resort’s sponsorship of Hight is for several years. She is also receiving financial backing by Toyota for the season.
“I love Tahoe more than anything. I’m excited for that event, competing at home again and being around all of my friends,” she said.
Hight will participate in a highly competitive snowboard superpipe field, which starts on Thursday.
“I think women’s snowboarding has come so far since I started competing. The competition is definitely stiff, so it should be a good show for everyone and a fun contest to compete in,” Hight said.
