South Lake Tahoe student awarded Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Julio Arrue, a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, has been awarded the prestigious Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship. A passionate 8th-grade student with a strong interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), Julio applied for the national Boys & Girls Clubs of America scholarship to further pursue his academic and career aspirations.
“It feels amazing to be awarded this scholarship because I get to go to Stanford University, where I will learn so many new things and meet a lot of people,” said Arrue.
The Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship is awarded annually to Boys & Girls Club members nationwide to help them develop their skills and reach their full potential. Founded in 1994 by baseball legend Hank Aaron and his wife, Billye Aaron, the Chasing the Dream Foundation supports youth with exceptional abilities and limited financial resources. Each year, scholarships of up to $3,500 are awarded to 44 Club members across the country.
Over the years, Julio has grown into a curious, motivated, and well-rounded young person who exemplifies the values of the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. He is deeply passionate about STEM and consistently seeks out opportunities to explore new concepts and technologies.
“Julio is always eager to dive into new challenges, especially in areas like 3D printing and robotics,” said Ali Eller, Program Director. “His creativity, problem-solving skills, and growth mindset truly set him apart.”
“The Club helped prepare me for this opportunity with the help of David Wise, our former STEM Specialist,” said Arrue. “He taught me how to code, build, 3D print, laser cut, make stickers, make water bottles, and so much more.”
Beyond STEM, Julio is an active and engaged Club member who participates in a wide range of programs, including the Club’s Art Show, Winter Recreation programs, and other enrichment camps. His openness to trying new activities and his support of fellow members set him apart as a positive role model and emerging leader within the Club.
