James “Gypsy” Haake, beloved actor and legendary “Mistress of Ceremonies” was born in Morristown, NJ on Feb. 15, 1932. A remarkable career spanning 70 years, Gypsy danced in the chorus on Broadway; managed the famous Gypsy’s cabaret in NYC, and guest-starred in TV and film. He was the MC at the famous La Cage aux Folles night club in Beverly Hills. His wit and extravagant style caught the attention of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft. They selected him for the role of “Sasha” in their feature film, To Be or Not To Be. He is most known for his impact on the drag culture in Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs, and around the globe.
Gypsy passed away peacefully on Sept.13, 2026 surrounded by friends and family who loved him dearly. He is survived by his niece, Cyndi Haake Marchand, her husband, Eric, and his adopted family Paula and David Woodley.
There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, October 24 from 2:00-4:00 PM at Oscar’s, 125 E Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262. All are welcome to attend.
