Know When Southwest Gas May Access Your Property—and How to Spot Scams
Southwest Gas employees and authorized contractors may need to access your property as part of the essential work required to safely deliver natural gas. Whether entering a yard or knocking on your door, this access is often necessary, even without a scheduled appointment, to inspect, maintain, or upgrade utility-owned infrastructure that supports safe and reliable service for your home and community.
To further support safe and reliable service, Southwest Gas owns and is responsible for maintaining all natural gas infrastructure up to the meter on a customer’s property, while anything beyond the meter is the customer’s responsibility. Understanding this distinction can help clarify why employees or authorized contractors may need to access your property.
Because this work can sometimes bring individuals to your home unexpectedly, it’s important to stay aware and informed. The Federal Trade Commission reported that impersonation scams consistently rank among the most reported fraud categories. So, it’s important to stay vigilant and in the know of who is on your property and why.
Why Would a Southwest Gas Employee Be on My Property?
Southwest Gas employees are present throughout our communities, working to provide customers with safe, reliable natural gas service. This work requires them to regularly:
- Read, maintain, or replace natural gas meters
- Conduct leak surveys to ensure system safety
- Locate and mark underground utility lines before digging projects
- Perform system upgrades or routine maintenance
To help ensure your safety and peace of mind, it’s important to know how to identify legitimate Southwest Gas employees and authorized contractors. The following tips can help you confirm that the person on your property is properly credentialed and there for official work.
How to Verify a Southwest Gas Employee or Authorized Contractor
Here are some key ways to verify an employee or authorized contractor:
- Ask to See Identification. Every Southwest Gas employee and most authorized contractors carry an official ID badge. This badge will feature:
- The Southwest Gas logo or an authorized contractor logo
- The employee’s name and photo
- Look for the Uniform or Vehicle. Southwest Gas employees typically wear a tan-colored uniform with the Southwest Gas logo. Some employees or authorized contractors may not be in full uniform, but many will wear clothing featuring the official Southwest Gas logo. Official vehicles will display either a Southwest Gas logo or an authorized contractor logo.
- Call to Confirm. Call Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020 to verify the person’s identity. The team can confirm whether someone from Southwest Gas or one of its authorized contractors is scheduled to work in your area.

- Hang up or shut the door immediately
- Do not share any personal or financial information, log in details and passwords
- Call 877-860-6020 to verify any contact claiming to be from Southwest Gas
