Trouble in winter wonderland

The competition death this weekend of Nick Zoricic (Grindelwald) and the recent unnecessary skier collisions at Heavenly bring to mind the key role of South Lake Tahoe in contributing to advancing American recreational ski safety. A scientific medical survey, decades long, was initiated right here in 1975 by a Barton skier neurosurgeon. It was focussed on skier collision and brain injury, leading to identification of the severity of Skier-Skier Collision brain injury and even death. This ski research achieved national change. The eventual result was wide acceptance of ski helmets. Many lives have been saved.

All this happened quietly at Barton Memorial Hospital and the nearby ski slopes.

Congratulations to South Lake Tahoe and Barton Memorial Hospital!
