Earbud Insider: Protect Your Ears from Harmful Sound Levels
With earbuds and personal music devices being so common, it’s crucial to understand their risks. If not used carefully, they can cause permanent hearing damage.
Thirty-one million Americans between the ages of 6 and 69 are affected by noise-induced hearing loss, including more than 5 million under age 20. This damage is irreversible, making it vital to take steps to avoid it.
Key Risk Factors
· Volume: Music through earbuds can reach damaging levels (94–110 decibels).
· Proximity: Direct sound to the ear increases the risk.
· Duration: Long listening times can damage hearing.
· Family history: Genetic factors can also affect your hearing.
Tips for Safe Listening
· Use noise-cancelling earbuds to block external sounds, reducing the need to raise the volume.
· Limit volume by keeping it at 80% if listening for less than 90 minutes; 60% if longer. Take breaks.
· Use hearing protection for environments with sounds above 85 decibels (e.g., concerts, machinery).
Signs of Hearing Loss
· Trouble understanding conversations in noisy places
· Constant need for repetition
· The sensation that people are mumbling
· Ringing or buzzing sounds
If you notice these signs, consult an audiologist early to preserve or restore your hearing.
