Magic Realism: Famed artist Rob Gonsalves at South Tahoe Marcus Ashley Galleries

ALL |
One of the most popular artists Marcus Ashley Galleries has featured will be present Sunday in the first personal artist appearance of the summer.
Rob Gonsalves, who calls his art magic realism, counts as influences Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher.
Gonsalves believes that his work differs from pure surrealism because it is deliberately planned and makes the viewer think, a gallery spokeswoman said. His ideas are largely generated by the external world and involve recognizable activities combined with realistic scenes, expressing the human desire to believe in the impossible.
Gonsalves was born in Toronto in 1959. He developed an interest as a child drawing illusions from his imagination. By age 12, his awareness of architecture grew as he learned perspective techniques and began to do his first paintings and renderings of imagined buildings. Gonsalves went on to study architecture, but his love for creatively drawing and painting led him to pursue art full time.
He will be in the gallery in the Raley’s Village Center from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, June 13. Marcus Ashley, located in the former Neighbors Bookstore, will have artist appearances each weekend through Labor Day.
