Ferenc (Frank) Susztar was born in Hungary on July 14, 1936, and passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024, in Carson City, NV.
Frank immigrated to the United States in 1956 after escaping Hungary into Austria during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Arriving in Fresno, CA, his first job was sweeping floors in a furniture factory. After learning English, Frank moved to Yosemite National Park and began working as a busboy in the Ahwahnee Hotel’s main dining room. Eventually he transitioned to the kitchen where he began his career cooking. It was there he met his future wife, Irmgard. After marrying, they moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1964.
Frank worked at both Harrah’s and the Del Webb Sahara Tahoe, eventually becoming Executive Chef of the House of Lords. In 1977, Frank and Irmgard purchased Frank’s Coffee Shop later expanding and renaming it Frank’s Restaurant.
Frank’s Restaurant was a beloved breakfast spot for locals and visitors for 25 years. Frank and Irmgard sold the business and retired in 2002 and soon after moved to Minden, NV.
Frank is survived by his children Chantel Dziewit Susztar and Ronald Susztar, Rebecca Stair and Karen Susztar, Robyn and Steven Susztar; grandchildren Ashton and Avery; and great-grandchild Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his wife Irmgard, his sister, and his twin brothers.
A prayer memorial will be held on August 8, 2025, starting at 1:00 p.m.
