Orange Tigers continue to devour their AYSO foes
South Tahoe AYSO’s postseason tournament games became do-or-die matches last weekend as the double-elimination format began to end some teams’ seasons.
In Under 10 boys action, the Orange Tigers devoured the Green Dragons by the score of 6-0. Jose Mariscal scored three goals and Miguel Gonzales scored two. Jamison Bobo played strong in goal to get the shutout.
The Orange Tigers also played the Dark Blue Lightning on Saturday and won again. The score was 4-0, with two goals by Mariscal and one each by Gonzales and David Lavesque. Again goalie Bobo held the opposition scoreless.
The other undefeated team in the U10 boys division is Goldfinger. They jaundiced the Red and White Dynamite by the score of 3-1. Goldfinger crossed the goal numerous times in the first half to no avail as the score remained 0-0. In the second half, a furious attack led many shots and goals by Ricky Braun, Kyle Wallace and Tommy Martin. There were also several spectacular saves by Goalie Colby Cain in Goldfingers’ win.
Dynamite’s goal was scored by Jorge Lopez.
On Oct. 8, the Dark Blue Lightning struck the Green Pythons 4-0. Gavin Chandler scored three goals and Jonathan Weldy held the Pythons scoreless.
In other action, the Light Blue Lightning defeated the Turquoise Turbulence on Oct. 10; the Snow Leopards beat the Silver Snakes on Oct. 11 and the Light Blue Lightening struck the Raptors on Oct. 12.
On Saturday, the Snow Leopards pounced on the Tornadoes 2-1 with the decisive goal being scored by Chris Whatford and the Green Pythons also squeezed the Green Dragons 4-0 with George Gomez scoring twice.
Play continues this week and this weekend to determine the champion.
U10 Girls
In a surprising playoff result, Blue Thunder dominated a game that saw the Under 10 Girls division-leading Purple Stars beaten 5-1 at Kingsbury Middle School on Oct. 8.
The Stars were held to a single late goal by their star striker Brianna Orlich, who had been contained throughout the game by the Thunder’s Moriah Lane in a determined defensive effort.
In addition, the Blue and Black Attack beat up on the Peach Pounders 3-1. Hannah Kurtzweiler scored twice and Olivia Mason added the third goal for the Attack. Julie Ford and Erika Cook saved numerous shots on goal.
The Attack came back Oct. 10 to beat the Cheetahs 2-0. Cook scored on a penalty kick and later Kurtzweiler booted one in as the goalies and Rhiana Cerceo continued to play tough.
On Oct. 11, the Super Shooters kicked the Flaming Dolphins 2-0 on goals by Lindsey McCall and Terra Bachenger.
On Oct. 12, Rebecca Bruce of Blue Thunder scored early and kept the pressure on the Stars defense in a 3-0 victory. Bruce, Shelby Gilmore and Gabriela Yanez continually struck openings in the Stars’ back line. When the Stars were able to mount an attack, they were ably contained by central defender Lyric Harwick and goalkeeper Danielle Henson.
The Purple Stars were on their game in beating the Lightning Bolts 7-1.
Orlich scored six of the Stars’ goals with Caroline Baghdikian adding the seventh.
In other playoff games, the Blue and Black Soccer Attack bruised the Emerald Strikers 3 -1.
The Emerald Strikers held a determined Blue and Black team to a single first-half goa, then rallied to tie the game early in the third quarter. Only two late goals by the Blue and Black sealed the win.
One game seemed like it would never end. The Super Shooters beat Blue Thunder in a shootout.
In what was probably the best game of the Under 10 girls’ tournament so far, the Super Shooters came through victorious on the second penalty of the sudden-death shootout. Lindsey McCall put the Shooters ahead in the second quarter, but Blue Thunder kept pressing for an equalizer. After hitting the post and crossbar and forcing several fine saves from goalkeeper Hannah Daly, Rebecca Bruce shot home a rebound from close range in the middle of the third quarter to level the score.
The teams finished regulation tied and the score remained the same through two sudden-death overtime periods. All five of the shooters on each team were successful in the first shootout that ended 5-5. Brittany Rumble squeezed home the decisive penalty kick.
U12 Boys
On Oct. 8, the White Lightning struck the Silver Sharks 3-1. Later that evening, The Clash squeezed by the Crushers 2-1.
On Oct. 9, the Black Raiders pillaged a 4-3 victory over the Clash and H2O rained on the Tahoe Flame 2-1.
Oct. 10th action saw the Purple Predators devour the Silver Sharks 4-2, while the Red Vipers struck for a 3-2 victory over White Lightning. On Oct. 11, the Raiders defeated the Jalapeno Poppers and the Purple Predators slipped by the Flame 4-2.
On Saturday, the White Lightning flashed by the Raiders 5-2 and the Red Vipers won out over H2O in a shootout. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation play. No goals were scored in overtime, but in the shootout the Vipers prevailed 4-3.
U12 Girls
On Oct. 10, the Fushia Flames burned the Chill Chicks 2-0. The Flames made their two first-half goals stand up for victory.
The Burgundy Bad Girls took on the Shooting Stars, who scored a goal in the first half and through rugged defense and goalkeeping held onto the slim lead for a 1-0 win.
In other action, the Purple Poison overcame the Green Chili Peppers and the Gladiators defeated High Altitude 3-2.
On Saturday, the Gladiators beat the Chill Chicks 4-2 and the Flames won out in a wisp over the Shooting Stars 1-0. The Burgundy Bad Girls shut down Purple Poison 3-2 in overtime. Megan Lafferty and Morgan Cook scored during regulation with the “baaadest” shot in overtime coming from Gina Locicero.
U14 Boys
The Browns clipped the Red Tail Hawks 7-3.
A super team effort led by Ishmail Mora’s two goals and the repeated shots and passes of Justin Galbreath, Jesus Marisco, Colin Farnsworth, Rafael Aguire and the goalkeepig of Martin Rider powered the Browns over the Hawks.
On Oct. 10, the Hawks came back to swoop revenge. The Hawks trailed 3 to 1 going into the second half against Gang Green. But the Red Tail Hawks came from behind to tie the game at the end of regulation play. The game eventually went into double overtime, when the Hawks scored the winning goal.
U14 Girls
On Oct. 9, Fatal Impact crashed Icy Hot’s party by the score of 3-1 and the Lavender Ladies squeezed by the Fire Dragons 2-1. On Oct. 11, Fatal Impact again scored three times in a 3-1 victory over Quicksilver Girls.
